The department "Anti-infectives from Microbiota" of Prof Christine Beemelmanns focuses on the identification and functional analysis of novel anti-infective natural products from microbial communities. Co-cultivation studies and cell-based assays in combination with chemical-analytical and molecular biological methods are used to evaluate new microbial natural product producers. The group uses established and innovative metabolomic, activity- and genome-guided methods to elucidate the structure of the secreted natural products. Die Abteilung „Antiinfectiva aus Microbiota“ von Prof. Christine Beemelmanns fokussiert sich auf die Identifizierung und funktionelle Analyse von neuartigen anti-infektiven Naturstoffen aus mikrobiellen Gemeinschaften. Ko-Kultivierungsstudien sowie zellbasierte Assays in Kombination mit chemisch-analytischen und molekularbiologischen Methoden werden zur Evaluierung neuer mikrobieller Naturstoff-Produzenten verwendet. Zur Strukturaufklärung der sekretierten Naturstoffe wendet die Gruppe etablierte und innovative metabolomische, aktivitäts- und genomgeleitete Methoden an. Basierend auf den isolierten Naturstoffen erfolgt die funktionale Analyse und Evaluierung ihres Wirkspektrums. Do you remember the winter of 2022? The paediatric intensive care units were full of babies and small children who could barely breathe. This was because the measures taken to combat the coronavirus pandemic in the two previous winters meant that many children had not yet had their first RSV infection. As a result, there were many children who were suddenly ill and therefore more than usual who were seriously ill.

The respiratory syncytial virus is particularly bad for babies under 3 months of age. This is because it can lead to severe pneumonia - and sometimes life-long consequential damage...

Erinnert ihr euch noch an den Winter 2022? Die Kinder-Intensivstationen waren voll von Babies und kleinen Kindern, die kaum Luft bekamen. Denn durch die Maßnahmen zur Bekämpfung der Corona-Pandemie in den zwei Wintern davor, hatten viele Kinder noch nicht ihre erste RSV-Infektion durchgemacht. Deshalb gab es viele Kinder, die auf einmal krank waren und damit auch mehr als sonst, die schwer krank waren.

Für Säuglinge unter 3 Monaten ist das Respiratorische Synzytialvirus besonders schlimm. Denn es kann zu schweren Lungenentzündungen führen – und manchmal bleiben lebenslange Folgeschäden.

Multi-resistant bacteria live on the skin of some of us. When we are young, healthy and fit, there is o reason to worry. But it can happen to all of us that we suddenly become sick, our immune system is weakened or we are seriously injured and must go into hospital. When multi-resistant bacteria invade our bodies, it can be life-threatening. And the problem is getting worse.
Mark Brönstrup is a professor of chemical biology at the HZI and is researching substances to combat antibiotic resistance.

Multiresistente Keime leben bei manchen von uns auf der Haut. Wenn wir jung, gesund und fit sind: Kein Grund zur Sorge. Aber uns allen kann es passieren, dass wir plötzlich krank werden, unser Immunsystem geschwächt ist oder wir uns schwer verletzen und ins Krankenhaus müssen. Wenn dann so multiresistente Bakterien in unseren Körper eindringen, droht Lebensgefahr. Denn über normale Antibiotika lachen die nur müde. Und dieses Problem wird immer größer.
